Role of Women Sages in Vedas - Dr. Chandrhas Shastri

Role of Women sages in Vedas

-                                                   Dr. Chandrhas Shastri

We are feeling proud as performing the worship of Bharat mata. In Atharva Veda we find Matrubhumi suktam. In this suktam we say that the earth is our mother and we are her sons. Really, it is very gentle and noble concept. If the earth is our mother then we say Vasudha ev kutumbakam.

Vedas have the vital role in nourishment of our culture. They are the route of our culture. In the history of our culture Men as well as women also contributed. Both have performed their significant role. As we read about the sages like Vasishtha, Vishwamitra, Angiras, Atri, Jamadagni etc., we have to know women sages like Gargi, Mamata, Wishvavara etc.

This blog is an attempt to make aware about Women sages’ contribution in Vedas. The woman sage is termed as Rishika. According to traditional view, the knowledge in Vedas is universal truth. So no one can generate or create it, but the great sages can experience it. They can watch it through their wisdom-eyes. The sages like Grutsamada , Vasistha, Vishwamitra watched that universal knowledge. As them, Women sages (Rishikas) like Gargi, Mamata, Apala also watched that universal knowledge.

1. Brahmvadini Mamata:

Mamata was sage Dirghatama’s mother. We find her Richa  praying the Agni in Rig-Veda, Mandal I, Suktam 10th .

2. Brahmvadini Wishvavara:

In the tradition of the sage Atri, we find Brahmvadini Wishvavara. And we find her Richas prayin the Agni in Rig-Veda, Mandal V, Suktam 8th .

3. Brahmvadini Apala:

Brahmvadini Apala belongs the tradition of the sage Atri. We find her Richas in Rig-Veda, Mandal VIII, Suktam 91st .

4. Brahmvadini Ghosha:

Ghosha was the daughter of the sage Kaakshiwan. We find her Richas praying Ashwinikumaras, in Rig-Veda, Mandal X, suktam 39th , 41st .

5. Brahmvadini Surya:

In Rig-Veda we find Brahmvadini Surya’s 47 Richas in the suktam which narrates about marriage. ( Rig-Veda, Mandal x, Suktam 85th )

6. Brahmvadini Vak:

Vak was the daughter of Ambhruni. We find her eight Richas in Rig-Vedic Devisuktam. (Mandal x, Suktam 125th ) The Devisuktam is being chanted at the time of Chandipath.

The blog is very short because of my limitations. Actually the work done by Rishikas is not only great but immortal and ideal also. Really I would like to bow before them and pray for welfare of all.

(Correct things in the blog are the token of Shriguru’s blessings where errors are the token of my own limitations. Please forgive me if you find any error.)
